Ba-Karbo Solution for Perfusion

COMPOSITION

Sodium Bicarbonate: 84 mg/mL

USAGE AND DOSAGE

Ba-Karbo Solution for Perfusion is administered by slow intravenous (IV) route in animals with severe acidosis to correct the bicarbonate deficit. The solution should be gently warmed to 37°C before administration.The ideal dose is calculated based on the bicarbonate deficit (mEq/L) determined by blood biochemical analysis and the extracellular fluid volume, which is considered to correspond to 20% of the animal’s body weight.When biochemical analysis is not available, the dose may be determined based on clinical signs, using an average dose of 2 mL/kg body weight.Depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s requirements, the solution may be administered undiluted (8.4%) or as an isotonic solution (1.5%). It may be diluted with 5% dextrose solution or isotonic saline and administered over periods of 4–8 hours, at a dose of 2–5 mEq/kg (1–2.5 mL/kg).Treatment should be continued with a 1.5% isotonic dilution. As clinical signs improve, the dose and frequency of administration should be gradually reduced until treatment is discontinued.

Example calculations:
Requirement for a 500 kg cow:
500 × 10 mEq/L × 0.2 = 1,000 mEq (500 mL of product)
Requirement for a 50 kg sheep:
50 × 10 mEq/L × 0.2 = 100 mEq (50 mL of product)
Requirement for a 10 kg dog:
10 × 10 mEq/L × 0.2 = 20 mEq (10 mL of product)

INDICATIONS

Ba-Karbo Solution for Perfusion is used as supportive therapy in the treatment of metabolic acidosis in cattle, horses, sheep, goats and dogs, particularly in cases of:

  • Respiratory acidosis associated with carbon dioxide retention;
  • Metabolic acidosis caused by the accumulation of acidic metabolites resulting from metabolic disorders;
  • Renal acidosis associated with inadequate renal excretion of hydrogen ions.

It may also be used as an alkalinizing agent for rehydration in cases of mild diarrhea.
